10/28/2025 - GDT's Frankenstein!

tags: #frankenstein #movies | feeling: amazed and ecstatic

Hello! Sorry for the short sabatical there, I got caught up with life stuff, (and by life stuff, I mean playing Deadlock with my friends basically every night) but I've got some downtime now and I have some amazing news! I saw Guillermo ddel Toro's Frankenstein in theaters!!

For those who don't know me, Frankenstein has been one of my biggest special interests for many many years. I love the story so very much, and it holds a special place in my heart. I couldn't tell you how many times I've taken inspiration from Frankenstein, and it was truly so inspiring for me as a young creative. That's why, when I heard GDT was making an adaptation of Frankenstein a few years back, I was ecstatic to say the least!

I love GDT's directoral style and the stories he likes to tell. I grew up watching Hellboy, and when I heard he was responsible for a Frankenstein adaptation, I began following the development of it for about 2 years I'd say? In that time I had fallen in love with Jacob Elordi's performance in Saltburn, so when he replaced Andrew Garfield as the Creature, I was even MORE invested! (fun fact! one of my favorite hats that i wear out and about pretty much daily is the same hat jacob has from pally hollywood!) I was super worried when it was released though, as my boyfriend and I live in the middle of nowhere and GDT was very open about having a limited release, but I think GDT heard my cries in his sleep or something as a showing dropped about an hour away from me!

So, boyfriend and I took a mini roadtrip to a town an hour out to watch Frankenstein, and it was worth it. It was so fucking worth it. GDT's Frankenstein was such a beautiful adaptation of Mary Shelley's work. I cried about 4 times. It touched me so deeply, and I was just in awe at how amazing it was. I wish it was screening closer so I could see it again, but that's okay. I definitely plan to get it on DVD one day, and hopefully the art book too. Everything about it was so beautifully done, from the dialogue, the cinematography, the sets, the costumes... EVERYTHING. You could tell GDT cared so deeply about telling this story. I wouldn't be surprised if Mary Shelley's work is what inspired him to make the type of movies he does now. It was handled with so much love and understanding, and even with things that were changed, it was done so thoughtfully and well. I feel so blessed to be alive and able to see this in theaters when it came out.

All in all, I had an amazing time. The movie was much better than I could've ever imagined, and I'm so grateful I was able to see it with my boyfriend. We had an amazing time, and I can't wait until I'm able to see it again.
