09/27/2025 - So the Homestuck Pilot Dropped...

So, the Homestuck pilot dropped today... I watched it with some friends who know nothing about Homestuck and my boyfriend who mostly knows Homestuck through association with me, which led to an interesting experience.

All in all, it was... Not the best. I see a lot of people coping about it online, but I think just seeing their favs animated in a show pilot just caused people to feel more positively about it than they really should LOL.

It wasn't very forgiving for anyone who didn't know anything about HS. My friend says it may just be a proof on concept in hopes that the show could be picked up, but even so, I feel like it kinda failed in that department. Like, at least Hazbin Hotel's pilot had a plot people could follow. If you've never read HS before, you're just going to be confused, like my friends were. Nothing was explained except for the inventory system, which seemed to be the only thing my friends could reliably recall from the pilot. The voice acting ranged from bad to fine. I liked Jade's VA a lot, but everyone else was... Kinda bad. I hate to say it, but even Toby Fox wasn't the best. He sounded really ameature, which sucked a lot.

The animation was okay, but I expected it to be so. As much as people hate on the designs of Vivziepop, which reasonably so, when the team is given simple and solid designs, they can animate them very well. But the writing is a shoddy mess. I went on a long tangent to my friends about how I believe HS was made purely for the medium of a webcomic, and the pilot just goes to show how true that is. We needed more time to understand what was goiung on, like how the comic gives us, and the fact that the whole series is a play off of browser flash games just makes it so much more confusing. Plus we don't learn anything about any of the characters except for vague narration about John, which in my opinion, isn't really learning about him. We're being told, not shown.

I feel like it's kinda hard to form a concrete opinion about it since we were given literally nothing. It was just a confusing mess that ended in a fanservice compilation so the long time oldhead HS fans could point at the screen and squeal about Vriska. That's about it honestly lol. I knew I felt a deep sense of dread about this for a reason.
