Frankenstein

I ADORE Frankenstein. And when I say Frankenstein, I mean the story of Victor Frankenstein, not the Monster. I've loved it ever since I was in high school, and I genuinely believe this story changed my life. I've never stopped thinking about it since, and I truly think it's one of the best stories ever written. The Monster is one of my favorite fictional characters ever, and Victor is such an interesting person to follow and to study. He's starts almost endearing, but quickly spirals into an egotistical, infuriating asshole, and I think Mary Shelley charactarizes him so well. I love how the Monster is written. I love how he thinks, how he speaks, and how he feels. He's such a deep character, unlike what Universal's adaptation leads you to believe. He's well read and smart and his struggles are so real.

Without getting too deep on main, I relate a lot to the Monster's story; being left on your lonesome and jaded by the fact that no one dares to give you the time of day because you're different and how that can affect a person. I read Frankenstein during a hard time in my life, and a line that's always stuck with me is spoken by the monster; "Life, although it may only be an accumulation of anguish, is dear to me, and I will defend it." That, and along with many other lines in the book, helped me see things in a whole new light, and led to me appreciating life so much more despite so many difficulties being thrown my way as I was growing up.

All in all, Frankenstein is a story that is so near and dear to me, no one gets it like I do, and it inspires so much of my own work. I love all of the themes, the characters, the dialogue, the setting... It's just perfect. I'm currently on a journey to watch every niche Frankenstein movie in existence, while also collecting copies of the book. I don't have much now, just the limited edition hard cover from Barnes and Nobel & the Junji Ito manga adaptation, but MORE. WILL. COME. Here's to hoping a good movie adaptation comes out soon, I hate how they've all basically been misses so far.

Batman

I FUCKING LOVE BATMAN!!Batman has been one of my longest running special interests and one that I'm the most passionate about because it combines three of my other major interests; comics, movies, and superheroes! My first Batman comic I ever bought with my own money was The Batman Who Laughs, and while I'll admit it isn't the best comic ever made, it still holds a special place in my heart and I adore the Batman who Laughs as a character. I'm grateful I started my comic journey with that issue reflecting on it, because it allowed me to appreciate the batshit nature of comics a lot more than I had previously. I wish I had more of my older comics, especially because I don't remember them well anymore, but I've accumulated a fairly big collection as the years go on!

My all time faavorite Batman comic is probably Zero Year. I adored it before The Batman came out, and Greg Capullo is one of my all time favorite artists for the Batman in general (fun fact: i did a report on him in college!)! It also solidified the Riddler as my favorite villain. I also really like The Batman Black and White's issue with the Riddler. I think that's an almost perfect Riddler story.

I love Batman so much that I'm struggling to think of what to write LOL. I literally have a Batman tattoo irl if anyone cares...

One of my all tiem favorite things about Batman that I think and talk about all the time is how strong of a character he is and how, not only his personality, but his morals (and honestly trauma lol) deeply affects how he treats those around him. Like, everything he does and every decision he makes can be circled back to that one horrific day in his childhood, and I think that's so intriguing. I love me a man with strong morals, and I think that's what leads me to be so hyper-critical of adaptations that change that. (cough cough Snyderverse cough cough)

Speaking of being hyper critical of adaptations, one I am NOT hypercritical of is The Batman (2022). It's so fucking good that I struggle to imagine another Batman or Bruce other than Robert Pattinson. I also really enjoy the Batman animated movies & series, like BTAS, Batman: Caped Crusader, Batman Under The Red Hood, and Batman vs. Dracula to name a few.

Movies

I love movies! I've seen many through my time. I grew up in a family that really enjoyed movies, my grandpa had a huge cabinet full of DVDs and he even used to burn me my own movies on DVDs when I was young. I always envied his huge DVD collection; he would tell me and my cousin to pick a movie together pretty much every night and we'd gather around his huge TV and watch them, and it was awesome. He introduced me to my favorite genre of fiction, horror! He showed me Saw when I was like, 6 years old I'd say? And it's stuck with me ever since.

One of my favorite things to do is show people movies they haven't seen before and have discussions about it. I know that sounds silly, but genuinely it's so fun to me! I remember showing my boyfriend Donnie Darko, and hearing his first impressions of the movie was so fun. I love hearing how the same media can affect different people in different ways. It's so awesome how the same piece of art can affect people so differently. Honestly I'd rather show people a movie and have them not like it than someone not pay any attention to it at all. That's what makes discussions around movies so interesting to me.

If you're curious, you can see my favorite movies and what I've been watching on my Letterboxd, but some of my favs of all time are THe Batman (2022), Mad Max Fury Road, Whiplash, Donnie Darko, Brokeback Mountain, Greener Grass, But I'm a Cheerleader, Little Miss Sunshine, There Will Be Blood, Scream, Saw, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, American Psycho, and many, many, many more.

On top of just loving movies, I also love the work that goes into creating them. Like, I especially enjoy Dr. Horrible's Sing Along Blog for this reason. The production of the movie is truly just a labor of love and that's so awesome. I also really like looking at Mad Max Fury Road's storyboards and concept art, they're all so cool and it's so easy to see how much care went into making that movie look absolutely stellar.

If I had to choose, some of my favorite actors are Paul Dano, Margot Robbie, Jake Gyllenhaal, Jim Carrey, Robert Pattinson, Edward Norton, Helena Bonham Carter, Joaquin Phoenix, Toni Collette, and many more!

Comics & Superheroes

I'm cramming these two together because even if they aren't the same they overlap a lot for me LOL.

But yeah! I love comic books & superheores! Aside from Batman, my fav heroes/anti-heroes/whatever/teams/stories idc are Deadpool, Spiderman, X-Men (Cyclops is my fav), Moon Knight, Watchmen, Invincible, Booster Gold, & more! I try to pick up comics whenever I can, leading to me having a pretty extensive collection IRL.

Other than the stories themselves, I just love comic books as a medium. I think the thought that goes into every step of making a comic is so cool and interesting, to the point where I actually studies comics writing, art, and letting for a few of my college courses! Comic artist & writers are some of my biggest inspirations within my own works across many mediums, and not many people notice just how pivotal comic books are when it comes to the media we consume today.

I dunno how much I'll update this, but my current reading list contains:

  • Absolute Batman
  • Spawn
  • (more) X-Men
  • Booster Gold & Blue Beetle (never finished it LOL)
  • The Flash (I haven't read a run all the way through in a long time...)
  • Transformers
and many more that I just can't remember right now LOL

I'm always looking to expand my reading list & collection,so if anyone has any comic recs, PLEASE do not hesitate to let

Video Games

I really like video games! I play a lot of different games, but as of now, my favorite genre is probably roguelikes. I really like the replayability and familiarity of roguelike games, and even if I forget things about the game, it's still super easy to jump back into it! Right now I'm playing a ton of Cloverpit, but I also really like Slay the Spire, UmaMusume Pretty Derby (lol), Darkest Dungeon, Balatro, Hades, and more! I also like Valve games A LOT. I've been into TF2 and HL2 for years at this point, and I'm also into Portal and L4D2! Some of my other favorite types of games are chill life sims, like Stardew Valley, Slime Rancher, and Animal Crossing, strategy games like Dot Age, Puyo Puyo Tetris, and Rim World, and other games like Blasphemous, RDR2, Fallout, World of Horror, and more! I also have a huge fondness for RPG Maker games like Hylics, Lisa, and OFF. Furhtermore, my first video game series ever that I still love with all of my heart is Mario. I LOVE Mario so much, I've played most of the mainline games, and I've been working my way through the RPGs! I loved Mario so much as a kid, I used to watch the Super Mario Bros. Super Show & make closet cosplays of Mario. He still means so much to me.

I love playing games on consoles and handhelds, I used to play so much Little Big Planet 2 and COD Black Ops as a kid. Sadly I don't have any of the consoles from when I was a kid, but I'm planning on slowly building up a collection of consoles again! I'll probably talk more about this in my Physical Media & Collections tab, but I currently have a 3DS that I LOVE full of awesome games.
